Take your time to comb the roots, prune the roots that are located at different heights, etc. (see pics for progression).
Also, don’t forget you’ll eventually be pruning back to the first or second nodes to develop the trunk line (see final image, from Meriggioli’s book on maples), so don’t waste your time wiring branches or trying to find movement in the trunk.
Plants might be pruned to fit in box. These are due for a pruning anyways, have your tools ready to pot soon after arrival!
